The Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the best in Russia. The ballet troupe of the theatre is one of the most popular in Russia and it successfully tours abroad.

On November 12, 1870, Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka’s opera A Life for the Tsar was performed in Perm; this day is considered the founding date of the Perm Opera Theatre. In 1874, the wooden building was dismantled in order to construct a new stone one. It was a building in the style of late Russian classicism designed
by the architect Karvovsky, with an auditorium for 900 seats. The new theatre welcomed its first visitors in 1878.

At the turn of the 20th century, the fascination with opera among Perm residents took on the character of a real epidemic. In the summer of 1910, “king
of the tenors” Leonid Sobinov and soprano Alma Fohström performed here. Both the building and the theatre itself became the architectural landmark of Perm. From time to time, significant events were held in the theatre, for example, celebrations of the reigning Romanov Dynasty Tercentenary in 1913.

In 1918, the brother of Nicholas II, Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich, being in exile in Perm and being a theatre admirer, repeatedly attended performances of the Perm Theatre. It is known from his personal diary that he watched several productions: Dream of Love by Kosorotov, My Baby and Beautiful Woman by an unknown author, Nora by Henrik Ibsen, The Merry Widow operetta by Franz Lehár, etc.

On May 14, 1939, the Perm City Theatre was renamed into the Perm Regional Opera and Ballet Theatre. During the Great Patriotic War, the building hosted the Mariinsky Theatre evacuated from Leningrad (at that time it was named after Kirov). For three seasons, artistes of the Mariinsky Theatre showed performances on our stage.

In 1946, the theatre was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, in 1965, it was named after Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, in 1969, it was awarded an honorary title of academic theatre.
